Best practices for growth via lateral hires

Growth and profitability are top focus areas at the modern law firm. Service reach can be achieved by a number of different strategies — network alliances, combinations, mergers — but the most common approach is hiring experienced lawyers or mature practice teams that bring their key clients with them.

On January 30, Intapp invites you to attend a roundtable where we will discuss how firms are taking a modern approach to streamlining lateral-hire onboarding, and implementing strategies to help establish a productive and successful relationship between the lateral hire and the firm.

The topics we will explore include:

  • How do firms organize conflicts clearance teams and establish service standards? How does an aggressive strategy to grow via laterals affect day-to-day work of the risk team and acquisition of new work by a firm’s current lawyers?
  • Given the complexity of onboarding a lateral hire, how does a firm protect itself against negative impacts on revenue?
  • “It takes a village” of administrators to integrate new files, establish ethical walls, issue engagement letters, and provide resources to ensure the lateral can be immediately productive. What specific steps are required?
  • Given the expense of onboarding a lateral hire, how does a firm ensure the lateral finds a home for themselves and their portable clients and avoid lateral “peacocking”?
